German Chancellor Angela Merkel has defended her country's increased defence budget, saying the nation will continue to be a reliable NATO partner. Ms Merkel's comments come in response to criticism from US President Donald Trump, who sent letters to several NATO allies bemoaning they are failing to meet their sharing targets ahead of a summit between the North American and European countries. She said Gemany is now committed to a budget of 1.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2025. In 2014, NATO allies agreed to a target of devoting 2 per cent of GDP to defence within a decade.
