British citizens who go to live in terror hotspots could face up to 10 years in prison under a new law which comes into force today. It is now a specific criminal offence to enter or remain in a 'designated area' overseas, under the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019. The plan was revealed last year as part of efforts to tackle the threat from so-called 'foreign fighters'. It means it is an offence to go to areas to fight against ISIS. However the law cannot be used retrospectively against individuals who have been to Islamic State territory and subsequently returned to the UK. There are exemptions for people who have a legitimate reason to be in the areas, for example journalists, aid workers or those attending a relative's funeral.
