Researchers have unveiled a new drug that is proving effective at treating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and slowing the spread of the crippling disorder. Details of a modest Royal Melbourne Hospital-led trial which used the drug, called CuATSM, was announced on Monday at the World Congress on Parkinson’s Disease, in Canada. Scientists believe CuATSM works by blocking the death of cells. The drug has been under development for 15 years by researchers from the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and the University of Melbourne. In a small trial funded by the FightMND Foundation, the drug also slowed to slow the progression of motor neurone disease and improve sufferers’ conditions. Image: Getty
