September 6, 2019. Federal resources minister Matt Canavan speaks to reporters in Darwin on September 5 after a resources conference in the city. Mr Canavan says
there’s “no reason” why Darwin cannot be an Australian manufacturing hub. This week's announcement by West Australian chemical company Coogee that it was investigating building a $400 million methanol plant near Darwin is described by Mr Canavan as a "major step forward” in realising that dream. “We already have lots of energy here… but if we are able to get the Betaloo going that will supercharge the manufacturing industry here in Darwin,” Mr Canavan says. There is already offshore gas being produced around Darwin and the Territory could deliver highly competitive prices of $4-$5 per gigajoule, which could support thousands of manufacturing jobs in Darwin, Mr Canavan says.
