[ Singles & Dating ] Open Question : Why does he keep pushing me away?

There is a guy I like. We are friends, but both expressed interest in each other. I want to date him, and yes, told him so, but he says we should take things slow and see what happens. He also expressed concern that if we do date it will mess up our friendship so he wants to weigh the pros and cons. Fine, I respect that. But every time I try to do something nice for him or show him I would be a good girlfriend to him, he pushes me away. For example, yesterday I was planning to make some cookies and he jokingly said I should make him some. So today when I made some and I asked did he still want some, he said, "You don't even know what kind of cookies I like" and "I like my cookies hot out of the oven, not cold!" He behaves this way EVERY time I try to do something nice for him or show him I care. Why does he keep pushing me away?! Yet he calls me everyday, at the same time to check on me or see what I am doing. It is casual talk, but if he wants to be friends, why would he want to talk every day or get upset when I do not answer his calls? I am fine with us just being friends, but I would at least like some clarity as to what he wants so I can move on if need be. Yet he doesn't even seem to know what he wants from me!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
